Here I am explaining about various courses of Marine Sector, which can do after completion of Engineering Degree or Diploma. Due to the availability of high salary, it is very attractive among youngsters.
1-Year Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering (PGDME)
1- Year Graduate Mechanical Engineer ( GME )
8-Months long Course for Electro Technical Officer (ETO)
2 Year M.Tech (Marine Engineering and Management)
2- Year M.Tech (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering)
2-Year M.Tech (Dredging and Harbor Engineering)
MBA in Port & Shipping Management
MBA in International Transportation & Logistics Management
In the above-mentioned courses, the hottest & demanding course is GME. It is a rumor that Marine Engineering Jobs are a combination of Triple W ( Wealth, Wine, Woman ). So it is the most lucrative job after Graduation.
I. COURSE APPROVED BY DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF SHIPPING
A. Graduate Mechanical Engineer
This course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). GME course comprises pre-sea training of 08 months at MTI Powai and structured shipboard training of 10 months thereafter on ships operated by SCI.
Eligibility:-B.E / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from an AICTE recognized College with a minimum of 50% marks in the final year of Engineering at the time of interview.
An equivalent degree or degree with specialization or electives other than the above educational qualification is NOT acceptable. AND Minimum 50% marks in English in 10th or 12th class.
Fee Structure:- For Male Candidate Rs. 4,00,000.00 & Female candidate Rs. 4,50,000.00 for one year course. A consolidated stipend of Rs.15000/- per month will be paid to candidates for structured shipboard training for up to 4 months.
NO stipend will be paid to candidates during shore-based training for the last 6 months out of 10 months of training. For the last 6 months, the candidate will arrange their own arrangement.
Medical Fitness:-Candidate must have good health and be fit for sea service as per existing MS Medical rules 2000/MLC 2006 applicable to seafarers.
Job Prospects:-After completion of 8 months shore training as GME and 10 months structured shipboard training as TME, candidates can appear for MEO CLASS-IV PART “B” examination after obtaining MEO CLASS-IV PART “A” exemption certificates from D.G. Shipping.
On completion of satisfactory performance of training period and reporting to SCI with MEO Class-IV, Part-B certificate of competency (COC), The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. may employ these candidates on ships owned, manned, or operated by SCI as per INSA MUI Agreement if vacancies are available.
Also, candidates will be required to furnish an indemnity bond to SCI for agreeing to serve on SCI vessels for a period of 5 years after obtaining the MEO CLASS IV PART B certificate of competency.
After obtaining the necessary sea experience and higher certificates of competency the candidate can rise to the rank of Chief Engineer officer on the ship.
Online Examination:- The online examination shall be of two (02) hours duration, which will be in the form of multiple-choice questions (MCQs). It will focus on the Quantitative Aptitude test, Professional Knowledge test, English Language test, and Reasoning Ability test.
The questions of the test will be bilingual (English and Hindi). Candidate MUST PASS in each of the objective tests to qualify for the personal interview.
The passing Marks in each test will be decided at a later stage by the MTI/SCI on the basis of the performance of all the competing candidates in each test.
1. Electro-Technical Officer (ETO)
ETO course is conducted at SCI’s Maritime Training Institute at Powai, Mumbai. This course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). ETO course comprises pre-sea training of 04 months at MTI Powai and structured shipboard training of 04 months thereafter on ships operated by SCI.
Eligibility– 3 Years Diploma/B.E / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication/ Communication engineering or Electronics and Instrumentation from and State Govt./Central Govt./AICTE recognized College
Course Fee:- Rs. 4,10,000.00
II. COURSE APPROVED BY INDIAN MARITIME UNIVERSITY
1. Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering
Admissions for this Programme are done in the month of January every year.
Eligibility:- Graduation in B.E. Mechanical / Naval Architecture disciplines from recognized institutes with minimum marks of 50% in final year and with minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.
Fee Structure:-PGDME Residential total course fee – Rs.3,50,000/- paid in two installments. In First Semester- Rs. 25,000/- & 1,62,500/- and 2nd Semester- Rs. 1,62,500/-
Medical Fitness:-Physically fit and should meet the medical requirements as specified by Director General of Shipping, Mumbai and are required to produce a certificate of medical fitness from a Doctor approved by Director General of Shipping. list of Approved Doctors for issuing the certificate is available at http://www.dgshipping.gov.in
EyeSight:- The EyeSight requirements are specified by the Directorate General of Shipping. All the candidates must meet these requirements and will have to produce a certificate of eyesight from a Doctor approved by the Director-General of Shipping.
2. M.Tech in Marine Engineering and Management
Presently the maritime industry faces numerous challenges in running the business. To meet these growing demands for maritime professionals and particularly, those who manage day-to-day activities in the shipping corporate need the knowledge of business strategy with technology. This course has been introduced at IMU Kolkata Campus.
Eligibility:- BE/B. Tech in Marine Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Naval Architecture with at least 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Associate Member of Institution of Engineers Part A and B in Mechanical Engineering with at least 60% aggregate marks (by examination).
MEO Class, I Certificate of Competency.

3. M.Tech in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering and M.Tech in Dredging & Harbor Engineering.
The programs in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering and Dredging and Harbour Engineering are aimed at graduate engineers who wish to make a career in the area of Ocean Engineering, Ship Design and Production, in the Allied Industries like Dredging, Port and Harbour Engineering industries.
These courses are available at the School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Visakhapatnam.
Eligibility–Engineering Graduate in Mechanical/ Civil/ Marine /Naval Architecture or equivalent with 60% marks in aggregate.
Fee Structure:- Total fee of Residential course – Rs.2,25,000/- paid in two installments. In First Semester- Rs. 25,000/- & 1,00,000/- and 2nd Semester- Rs. 1,00,000/-
4. MBA program in Port & Shipping Management and MBA program in International Transportation & Logistics Management
These MBA programs make you enable to understand both the operations and strategies of shipping as a single transport mode within the context of international multi-modal logistics.
The course also provides in-depth knowledge of the supply chain and logistics sector and the latest developments in transport management.
Eligibility– A bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate from Recognized Universities. A minimum of 50% marks in English subject in 10th or 12th or UG Degree.
Total fee of Residential course:– Rs.2,00,000/- paid in two installments. In First Semester- Rs. 25,000/- & 87,500/- and 2nd Semester- Rs. 87,500/-
